1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run Moving Forward

Yesterday, members of the 1,000 Islands Poker Run organizing committee unanimously decided to move ahead with their fourth annual event in Clayton, N.Y, They announced their decision in a post on the event’s Facebook page this morning.

“This decision was not made lightly as we are very concerned about the health and safety of our fellow boaters, volunteers, spectators and the benefactors of this great event,” they wrote. “We will adhere to the New York State rules and regulations as we have in the past, but especially due to COVID-19. We welcome you to visit our website and register to participate if you haven’t already. We will be working behind the scenes to bring you an event not to be forgotten! Stay tuned for updates and posts as things unfold. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone very soon.”

At present, 65 boats are registered for the July 16-18 poker run on the St. Lawrence River between the United States and Canada. Though the organizers limited participation to 120 boats in previous years, the 2020 run most likely will end up with a smaller fleet.

“I would say we’re definitely going to fill it,” said Bobby Cantwell, a member of the 1,000 Islands Charity Poker Run board. “But we’re considering capping it at a lower number than we’ve had in the past—maybe 80 to 85 boats.”

High-water levels that challenged organizers in 2017 and 2019 are not an issue this year, according to Cantwell.

“Water levels are always a concern,” he said. “We have high water levels right now, but we’re not at flood we’re not predicted to be at flood stage. So things look good from all angles. With all the hoops we’ve needed to jump through, I’ll take ‘good’ at this point.”
