143 MPH! Inside the Parveys’ Fastest Shootout Run to Date

Earlier today at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, Dennis Parvey—a dentist by trade—piloted his 43-foot Black Thunder V-bottom to a top speed of the 143 mph. With him as usual was his son, Jason. For the father-and-son duo, today’s top mark in their second trip through the one-mile course of the day was the fastest they’ve run to date in the Central Missouri event.

Done for the day, the Parvey’s plan to run the boat, which is powered by twin 1,675-hp supercharged engines, again tomorrow.

Said Jason Parvey (right): “My dad has been on his game. I have to give him a lot of credit.”

“On the first run, we were a little nervous because of the crosswinds so we kept the drives and tabs all the way down and 139 mph,” said the younger Parvey. “After the first run, we felt a little more comfortable so we lifted the tabs and drives a little more—and we’d burned a little fuel—and went to 143 mph. We are pretty happy with 143. It’s the fastest we’ve ever gone in the Shootout.”

Parvey emphasized that while and his father plan to compete again tomorrow they will take the same conservative approach.

“We’re not going to do anything stupid,” he said. “If you get out of shape in a V-bottom at this speed you’re not going to ‘drive out of it,’” he said. “At 143 today, even with the crosswinds, we were on kind of on cruise control. We’ll run again tomorrow, and if it feels comfortable we’ll go back and run another one. My dad has been on his game. I have to give him a lot of credit.”
