DCB Showcasing Open-Bow Beauties With Final Desert Storm Deliveries

Of all the go-fast powerboat owners heading to the annual Desert Storm Poker Run in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., this week, none have more to look forward to than Mauricio Vivanco and Paul Loska. That’s because the two Southern Californians will take delivery today of a couple new catamarans from DCB Performance Boats. For Vivanco, that means an open-bow/mid-cabin M31 Widebody—the second ever built by the El Cajon, Calif., company—powered by twin Mercury Racing 700 SCi engines.

Going the outboard-engine power-route, Loska will get to know his open-bow M28R—a first produced by the team at DCB—powered by a pair of Mercury Racing Verado 400Rs for the first time this week.

Orders for open-bow sport catamarans, as noted above, are unusual enough for DCB. But delivering two cats with that layout on the same day is downright rare. In fact, it’s never happened before.

“I wanted to be different from everyone else,” said Vivanco, who hails from the City of Downey. “I had never seen an M31 with an open bow before and I talked it over with (DCB president) Jeff Johnston. I told him I wanted to do it and he said, ‘OK, let’s get for it.’

“To be honest, my wife likes sitting up front—she doesn’t like sitting in a cockpit or a cabin,” he continued. “She’s love sitting up front. My last boat was 28-foot Commander cat and we had that one custom-built with an open bow, too.”

Built with the Vacuum Infused Resin process, the Vivanco’s half-capped 31-footer is dressed in DCB’s Phase III gelcoat package with exposed carbon fiber in its graphics. In the cockpit and cuddy cabin, the builder color-matched the cat’s 50-percent Alcantara interior to its exterior and included matching carpet with shaved diamond patterns in the fabric. For electronics, the owner kept thing clean at the dash with two Mercury Marine VesselView Seven monitors.

Thanks to Garmin GMi20 GPS units mounted in the backs of the seats for the driver and copilot, passengers will have all the basic information they need. Other goodies include a Stage III stereo system boasting multiple Rockford-Fosgate components, an Interior Rigid LED lighting package and a Seadek boarding kit installed between the engine hatches and on the steps leading into the cockpit from the rear bench.

To move the 31-footer from place to place, Vivanco ordered a triple-axle Extreme custom trailer with 18-inch custom FUEL rims, stainless steel fenders and a triangular drive guard and an under carriage LED lighting system. According to Johnston, the boat should run approximately 125 mph.

Like his fellow new DCB owner, Loska, who lives in Poway—a city not far from San Diego—has long been a fan of open-bow boats. But he’s also a big fan of outboard power. Currently for sale, his most recent ride is a 21-foot, outboard-powered Advantage with an open bow layout.

“I’ve always loved outboards and I’ve always wanted a DCB, so last August I finally ordered one,” he said. “This is my third or fourth boat but my first DCB, and it probably won’t be my last. And for the kind of boating we do—family boating—it’s going to be plenty big enough.”

Loska also ordered his Vacuum Infused Resin process-built 28-footer with a Phase III graphics package with carbon fiber accents in the graphics, a 50-percent Alcantara interior with diamond-sculped color-matched carpet and a Stage III stereo system, though his sound system is based on JL Audio components. To make reboarding easier for swimmers, he opted for a 40-inch billet swim step with SeaDek surfacing and a telescoping ladder on the transom. In the hope of keeping sand out of the cat’s pristine cockpit, he ordered the boat will a billet foot shower.

While Vivanco and Loska have different plans this week—Vivanco will tackle the poker run and Loska will not—both owners will take to the water wearing custom PFDs courtesy of DCB.

“We now include a brand new customized Lifeline jacket with every new boat build/ delivery,” said Johnston. “And we encourage each customer to enroll in Tres Martin’s Performance Boat School class. While we’ll bend over backward to over-deliver for our customers, safety is—and always will be—our No. 1 priority.”

Both boats will be on display at the DCB exhibit in the Desert Storm Street Party on McCulloch Boulevard tomorrow night.
