Image of the Week: Just Desert

Last week photographer Jay Nichols captured thousands of frames of high-performance powerboats running on the Colorado River during the Desert Storm event in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. While we’ve only viewed a fraction of them, what we’ve seen has been choice, as the saying goes. But our favorite image so far is one that has no boats in the frame.

Like Nichols, we’ve been lucky enough to see a lot of open waterways from helicopters before, during and after poker runs and offshore powerboat races on spectacular waterways in the United States and abroad. And though we’ve been up there to cover those events, the sheer beauty of open water never gets old.

“I took this shot during my helicopter flight from Las Vegas to Lake Havasu,” said Nichols. “This trip could have lasted forever. Mesmerizing country.”

We couldn’t agree more.
