APBA Offshore Championship Series: A Midseason Look

With last weekend’s Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix in the books, the six-race American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series has officially reached its midpoint. The next contest in the series, which is being produced by the Offshore Powerboat Association and Powerboat P1, is the St. Clair River Classic (July 26-28) in Michigan. That gives teams a little more than two weeks to regroup and prepare for the next round of competition.

On participation numbers alone, the inaugural APBA series has proven to be a runaway success in its first three races. The season-opener in Cocoa Beach, Fla., attracted a record-setting 59 teams. The following contest on the Lake of the Ozarks in Central Missouri saw more than 50 boats in the field—another record-setting turnout. Last weekend’s Sarasota event had 68 registered teams, a level of participation not seen at the 35-year-old event since the mid to late 1990s.

With one exception—Simmons Marine in Class 4—no team has run the table to take a commanding lead in the first three races. A broad mix of teams have enjoyed podium finishes, which means the competition so far has been close. Here’s a class-by-class look at the points standings heading into the St. Clair River Classic at the end of the month.

Class One

Tied with 279 points, the Victory and 222 Offshore teams lead the Class One points chase with Miss GEICO in second place. Worth noting: In just three races, each of the top-three teams has taken a checkered flag.

Supercat

Pro Floors Racing leads the Supercat-class ranks with 295 points, followed closely by M-Con with 268 points and AMH Motorsports with 249 points. Short version based on the points totals at the midpoint of season? The Supercat-class title is up for grabs.

Super Stock

Consistency has been the ticket for the new Performance Boat Center Super Stock team, which leads the series with 277 points but has yet to earn a first-place finish. The Osage Beach, Mo., dealership-backed team is followed by FJ Propeller with 268 points and Team Allen Lawn Care and Landscaping with 262 points. Worth noting: With 239 and 219 points, Shadow Pirate and CR Racing are definitely in the hunt.

Pro Stock Vee

While the LSB/Hurricane of Awesomeness team has struggled so far with its Super Vee-class efforts (the team currently sits second behind Instigator By Knucklehead Racing), it has won two out of the first three races to amass 309 points in Pro Stock Vee. Following the LSB/Hurricane of Awesomeness team is Octane with 266 points and Done Deal with 250 points.

Super Vee Extreme

A pair of wins—including one at its hometown Sarasota venue—has vaulted Boatfloater.com to the top of the Super Vee Extreme standings with 301 points. The team is followed by Marker 17 Marine with 236 points and JRA Boat Sales with 215 points.

Class 6

In the Class 6 ranks, six teams have opted to run in the first three races of the APBA series. NuWave Marine has notched 296 points to lead the pack, followed by Deception Offshore with 257 points and Boom Shaka Laka, which skipped the Lake Race, with 119 points.

Class 5
Just one Class 5 team, Disabled American Veterans, has competed in all three APBA race and leads the series with 249 points. Bronx Phantom has earned 210 points in the APBA circuit races, followed by Specialized Racing with 177 points.

Editor’s note: Class 4, 5 and 6 totals do not include points earned in the OPA Point Pleasant Grand Prix, which is not part of the APBA Offshore Championship Series.
