Baja Marine Brands See Upturn In Business
While Baja Marine’s chief executive officer Johnny Walker isn’t “ready to turn cartwheels,” he is pleased with the recent sales surge across the Baja, Donzi and Fountain lines. According to Walker, the Washington, N.C., company recently delivered a 38-foot Fountain center console and has two 35-foot Baja Outlaw sportboats and a 35-foot Donzi center console in production. What’s more, earlier this week the company, which sells its Fountain and larger Donzi models factory direct (read the story) took an order for a Donzi 38 ZR sportboat, the first 38 ZR ordered in “a long time” according to Walker.
Orders of Baja, Donzi and Fountain models from the Washington, N.C., boat builder reportedly are on the rise.
“Business has actually picked up quite a bit,” he said. “We currently have eight boats in excess of 35 feet in production. We haven’t seen that in awhile, so that’s a good thing. The smaller Bajas have done quite well—we have a backlog of orders for the 26 Outlaw and the 272 Islander—and we’re getting a lot of calls on the 35. It’s all coming along.”
Outside the performance-boat realm, sales of Pro-Line center consoles—also built under the Baja Marine umbrella—remain strong, said Walker. As for the increasing sales on the performance side, Walker said he’s not sure why that buyer segment is coming back but he’s pleased to see it.
“I think the message is getting out there and those buyers are coming back slowly but surely,” he said. “It’s all positive. But I’ve got to be a realist, build the boats one and at a time and apply sound business practices so we can be here in the future.”
