Cobra Close to Finishing First 270 Python Deck Boat

Nothing signifies that a boat is nearing completion more than the delivery of its engine. With that in mind, Cobra Performance Boats is getting ever so close to delivering its first 270 Python deck boat as the boat’s Mercury Racing 565 engine arrived at the company’s Montclair, Calif., facility on Wednesday morning.

The first 270 Python deck boat from Cobra Performance Boats in Montclair, Calif., is expected to hit the water in the next month or so.

The new model, which is based off of the proven ventilated bottom of Cobra’s 260 Venom catamaran, is the first from the company in a couple of years. Obviously new boat sales on the West Coast—Southern California in particular being that it once contained at least a dozen custom go-fast boat builders—has been fairly weak over the last six years. But the actual building of new models has been even fewer and farther between.

Jeff Bohn, owner of Cobra, said he’s seeing business pick back up a bit. He’s especially excited to have the first 270 Python only a few weeks away from being on the water, as he can’t wait to see the look on the customer’s face when taking delivery of the boat.

This Mercury Racing 565 engine will be providing the power to Cobra’s 270 Python, which offers a unique design on the transom.

The owner of two Cobra models previously, the customer went all out, ordering the boat fully capped and selecting a graphics package with “ice pearl” in the gelcoat so that the boat is extra shiny in the sunlight. The center-pod-style catamaran also a unique transom design in which the builder added some dimension and contrasting gelcoat colors (orange and silver) to the transom—a space normally left a solid white or another color.

“You really have to see the new 270 Python in person in the sunlight to appreciate the pearl that runs through every color on the boat,” said Bohn, who added that Cobra also has two V-bottoms in production—a 23-footer and a 26-footer.”It is going to be one bad-ass boat when it’s finished. The styling is new and we’ve integrated more features, storage and comfort than ever before.”

Powered by the Mercury 565 with a Bravo One XR Sport Master drive and Mercury’s Integrated Transom System, Bohn said he expects the boat to be one of the best-running deck boats on the market.
