A local Key West, Fla., sponsor of the J.D. Byrider teams for the last three years, Smokin’ Tuna Saloon is opening its doors to the general public for its annual “team party” on Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The party coincides with the completion of the first day of racing during the Super Boat International Offshore World Championships.

Offshore racing fans and others who attend will get a chance to meet and mingle with J.D. Byrider’s Superboat Vee-class team members, as well as with Tony Marcantonio, the owner and driver of the J.D. Byrider Superboat-class Skater catamaran. (Marcantonio, who took the 2014 season off to focus on his business, will return to offshore racing next year.)

“We’ll have drink specials with Papa’s Pilar Rum and racing shirts on sale,” said Bauer. “For live entertainment, Scott Kirby will start the evening, and he’ll be followed by Jeff Clark and the Key Lime Pirates, a really fun local band.”

Smokin’ Tuna Saloon owner and general manager Charlie Bauer has a long history of involvement with offshore racing teams. Bauer moved to Key West in 1988 to help its Hog’s Breath Saloon founder Jerry Dominy open the southernmost location of the famed watering hole and eatery. The Hog’s Breath Saloon in Key West became a longtime sponsor of noted former offshore racer Lee Murray. In 2011, Murray, who currently owns Murray Marine in Key West, introduced Bauer to Marcantonio and Smokin’ Tuna Saloon began its sponsorship deal with the J.D. Byrider teams.

Editor’s Note: Smokin’ Tuna Saloon is located at 4 Charles Street, just off the 200 block of Duval Street.
