Countdown to Key West: Team AMSOIL Ready for Return

According to Bob Teague, the legendary throttleman of the Team AMSOIL offshore racing team and owner of Teague Custom Marine, the team’s 36-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran from Douglas Marine is in Fort Myers, Fla., is awaiting his arrival at the end of this week so he can haul it down to Key West, Fla., for the 2014 Super Boat International Offshore World Championships.

Teague, who said the team recently rebuilt its sport trailer, is expecting some real close racing in the Superboat class, which could field as many as seven or eight boats during the three days of racing next week in Key West.

“We’re excited to be back racing in Key West,” said Teague, who has been racing in Key West since the 1980s but hasn’t competed there since winning back-to-back-to-back world championships (2008-2010) in the Team AMSOIL Skater in the former SuperCat Lite class with Mercury Racing 525EFI engines. “The thing is, anybody can win in Key West because there are a lot of opportunities for things to go wrong. What’s also good is that you’re not out of it if you have a bad day.

“I think our class and Superboat Stock will probably have the most competitive racing throughout the week,” Teague continued. “The Superboat Unlimited, Superboat Extreme and Superboat Vee classes should have a pretty good turnout as well. And you never know who’s going to show up in the Production classes that could make it interesting.”

Teague said he will be joined in the boat by longtime teammate Paul Whittier and that the AMSOIL crew (including Teague’s son, John) will be working hard to make sure the boat is ready for all three races. He also added that the boat is going to be on display on Duval Street during the parade on Friday night (Nov. 7).
