DCB Delivers M29 With Single Mercury Racing 1550/1350 Engine

Thanks to its dual-calibration design that provides owners with power and fuel-requirement flexibility, Mercury Racing’s turbocharged 1550/1350 engine has become popular with owners of twin-engine-powered high-performance catamarans and V-bottoms. But with a new DCB Performance Boats M29 catamaran delivered to Washington-based customer Paul Landry this week, the El Cajon, Calif., custom boat builder has completed the first single-engine-powered 1550/1350 model we’re aware of, at least in the United States.

In addition to a Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engine, this new DCB M29 is equipped with separate fuel tanks with electronic switchover capability to accommodate the dual-calibration engine’s different fuel requirements (click image to enlarge).

The M29 is not, however, DCB’s first single Mercury Racing quad cam four valve (QC4v) engine build. Earlier this month, the company delivered an M29 with a Mercury Racing 1550 engine. In 2017, the company built an M29 with a Mercury Racing 1350 engine. And in 2015, DCB delivered an F29 catamaran with a 1350 engine.

None of those cats, however, required separate fuel tanks with electronic switchovers for the engine’s twin power mode. Landry’s 29-footer was built with one 25-gallon tank for the 112-octane fuel needed for the engine to operate in 1,550-hp mode and two 55-gallon tanks for the 91-octane fuel needed for the engine to perform in 1,350-hp mode.

In 1550 mode, the manfacturer’s estimated top speed is more than 150 mph. In 1350 mode, DCB’s estimated top speed is 140-plus mph.

The half-capped M29 with a black powder-coated stainless-steel rubrail was constructed using the vacuum-infused resin process, balsa coring and additional carbon fiber reinforcement. For graphics, the client opted for DCB’s Phase III color gelcoat package.

The team at DCB decked out the cat with an all-Alcantara interior that extends into its cuddy cabin. The array of electronics includes two nine-inch Simrad NSS9 Evo3 touch-screen monitors, a nine-inch Garmin 922 center plotter, one Garmin GMi20 unit in the back of each bucket seat headrest and a four-person intercom system. The boat’s Interior Rigid LED lighting system includes mood, courtesy and cupholder lights. The cat’s Stage II stereo system boasts a Fusion head unit, two JL Audio amplifiers, eight JL Audio midrange speakers and a pair of 12-inch JL Audio subwoofers. The boat also is equipped with Mercury DTS controls and Mercury Racing K-planes.

To make life easier for swimmers, the customer ordered the 29-foot stunner with twin billet swim steps surfaced in SeaDek flooring and a foot shower.

In its typical fine and custom fashion, Extreme Trailers built a tandem-axle trailer with 18-inch FUEL rims, stainless-steel fenders, a triangular drive guard and an undercarriage LED lighting package.

“We are absolutely delighted with how this M29 turned out,” said Jeff Johnston, the president of DCB. “And with Desert Storm approaching, we still have a couple of more amazing deliveries to complete.”
