DCB M33R Catamaran No. 2 Nails Test Session

Yesterday’s first tests of the second DCB Performance Boats M33R catamaran left its Jackson Hole, Wyo.-based owner Chad Budge and the DCB crew delighted. While they didn’t run the 33-footer powered by Mercury Racing Verado 400R engines to its maxium speed—DCB M33R hull No. 1 reached 120 mph—DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte, Budge, and his wife, Dianne, took the cat to more than 110 mph in one- to three-foot chop on the Arizona side of Lake Havasu.

Budge, who owned one DCB M31 cat powered by Mercury Racing 700 SCi engines another powered by Mercury Racing 1100s as well as a few other high-performance V-bottoms, considered several sport cats before settling on the M33R. Yesterday’s test session, he said, validated his decision.

“They nailed it,” he said. “I’m a pretty critical person, and from the handling to the fit and finish to the very usable cabin—they nailed it. I waited a year-and-a-half for the new M33R, and it’s really, really nice.

“We spent all day running hard,” he continued. “My wife drives our boats, too, and she ran it to 100 mph. She loves it.”

Constructed with an all-carbon-fiber layup, the foam-cored 33-footer weighs in at approximately 5,100 pounds, according to DCB president Jeff Johnston and general manager Paul Miller. DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte guided the new owners through yesterday’s test session.

“Our head laminator, Daniel Alvarado, and his team did a fantastic job with the lamination and with the tooling for the M33R,” said Miller. “We made the hull as perfect and true as it could possibly be.”

“This was the best new-build experience I’ve ever had,” said Budge. “Working with Tony and Jeff and whole DCB team was a whole new ball game. They kept me informed every step of the way. It was phenomenal.”

Budge has a second home in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., so his M33R will pull much of its year-round duty on the adjacent waterway. But he’ll also run it on small lakes in Wyoming on Montana, where most recently he also ran his twin 1,100-hp engine-powered M31.

“My last boat had bigger turbocharged engines,” he said, then chuckled. “I think they’ll appreciate (quieter) sound from the outboards,”
