DCB Performance Boats Team Returns To Work With Strong Safety Measures In Place

As part of Phase 2 of San Diego County’s COVID-19 reopening plan, manufacturing facilities started coming back on line this week. Among those is DCB Performance Boats of El Cajon, Calif., which reopened Monday from a production-team furlough that began on March 23

“We went back to work in full force on Monday,” said Jeff Johnston, the president of the custom high-performance catamaran company. “That said—and I can’t emphasize it strongly enough—the health and safety of our employees and their families is our top priority.

“We furloughed 25-plus production employees in mid-March, while keeping the admin side of the company working from individual cubicles to respect and maintain all the COVID-19 precautions and requirements,” he continued. “It wasn’t ideal, but given the situation at hand we had the ability to keep a slow, yet steady, rhythm of production with a few of our independent contractors. This strategy allowed us to try and minimize the inevitable pile-up in our production process on new builds, as well as our Service Department, which we knew that we would face in two to six weeks or whenever the County of San Diego allows us to go back to work.”

Johnston said that DCB applied for the federal government’s first PPP funding but did not receive it. They reapplied for the second round and received federal funds about a week ago. That contributed to the company’s decision reopen when San Diego County gave it the green light.

The reopening is on a volunteer basis for each employee. Returning DCB workers have their temperatures taken every day upon their arrival at the facility, which has all required COVID-19 safety signs posted and handout safety literature available. The company is supplying each employee with personal protection equipment including masks, gloves and hand-sanitizer.

Every customer who might come in for a visit or update on a build receives the same treatment at the front desk—temperature taking, receiving safety literature—and must wear protective mask provided by DCB while on property.

“I know I said this before but it’s worth saying again,” said Johnston. “The health and safety of our employees and their families is our top priority.”
