Deep Impact ‘Healthy’ For 2014

While Deep Impact Boats, a Miami-based builder of custom performance-oriented center consoles, has been rumored to be everything from “in trouble to going out of business,” that is not the case, according to Randall Truesdale, the company’s director of sales and marketing. In a recent telephone interview, Trusedale, said the company has made big changes internally and is receiving an “influx of capital” from a private investor.

Deep Impact built this 39-foot Poker Run Edition model, which will be on display at the upcoming Miami Boat Show, in partnership with Boats Direct USA.

“We have had some tough times, but we are fine and the company is healthy,” said Truesdale. “We did a major restructuring internally to increase production and guarantee our delivery dates—and we’re in the process of ramping up production staff—so that when we tell a client it will take three months to get their boats it will not take four to six months.”

To help customers track the progress of their boats in production, the company is creating a portal through its website, which was redesigned and relaunched in late 2013, Truesdale said. Deep Impacts owners will be able to log onto the site and view photographs of their boats as they’re being built.

Slated for use as a tender, this recently completed Deep Impact 39 TE is powered by triple 350-hp Mercury Verado outboard engines.

“We have a lot of clients who live out of the country,” said Truesdale. “Thanks to the Internet, they can be part of the process remotely. We will upload images to the site where they can see them chronologically—they’ll have their own login and user name. They’ll be able to download and print the images. We may even create ‘books’ of their builds for them when they’re finished.”

Among the models the company will showcase during the upcoming Miami International Boat Show next month is a 39-foot Open Poker Run Edition that it built in partnership with Boats Direct USA. Future models include the still-in-progress 42-footer, which likely won’t be finished this year, and a 28-footer that is in the planning stages.

“The 28 will be for people who can’t necessarily afford a 33 or a 36,” he said. “We haven’t worked out the pricing numbers, but it will still be a nice boat, just a little more economical and not as option-laden as all of our other boats.”
