Desert Storm Poker Run Prepares for 10th Anniversary
I’m not sure whether to believe Jim Nichols, president of LakeRacerLLC, when he tells me that all is status quo for the 10th annual Desert Storm Poker Run, which, can you believe, is less than three months away (April 24-27). Not that status quo is a bad thing. It’s just that Nichols and company usually have something up their sleeve to spice up the poker run, which is presented by Teague Custom Marine and is known across the country for its hot boats, hot women and hot weather.
“We’re pretty much on track for another solid turnout at this point,” said Nichols, who has actually been involved with the poker run since 1999 when it was known as the HeatWave Poker Run and was organized by the Arizona Hot Boat Association. “We aren’t going to do much different—it’s going be a carbon copy of last year’s poker run as far as the schedule of events. Although we are planning to tighten up the vendor area on the golf course a little bit so that it is all together and that it spills out into the seating and entertainment area rather than surround it.”
Nichols hinted at the possibility of adding offshore racing to the schedule again, but said that it’s up in the air at this point. Still, the event has a full schedule between charity boat rides and an open house on Wednesday, a Street Party unlike anything else on Thursday, Friday’s poker run and the Desert Storm Shootout on Saturday. Throw in the three days the weekend before for the Lake Havasu Boat Show (April 19-21) presented by the Lake Havasu Marine Association, and there’s more than a full week of boating activities on the lake.
Nichols encourages everybody to register early and make sure they take care of their accommodations sooner rather than later.
