Donzi Icon 44 Catamaran: Taking A Much Closer Look

Since the news of its pending introduction broke almost a year ago, the Donzi Icon 44 catamaran has been creating serious buzz in the performance-boating community, especially among the Donzi faithful. Whether you see the quad Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard engine-powered, all-carbon-fiber-and-epoxy catamaran as a welcome product of evolution in the vaunted Donzi line or sacrilege to its V-bottom legacy, the 44-footer has been one of the most-talked-about new models slated to debut at the 2019 Miami International Boat Show, which opens Feb. 14.

Courtesy of Joe Curran, the chief operating officer of Donzi, Fountain and Baja parent company Iconic Marine Group in Washington, N.C., these new images of the 44-footer are sure to keep the conversation going.

Fully rigged with quad supercharged 400-hp outboards, the “race-bred” Donzi Icon 44 cat weighs in at a svelte 8,300 pounds. Its unconventional six-seat cockpit includes two front, center and decidedly forward bucket seats for the driver and copilot. Aft of those seats are four more buckets. With the exception of bench seating, Donzi’s designers left the rear cockpit wide open for socializing. They even included integrated swim steps between the paired-up outboards.

Working closely with the Iconic team, well-known Wilson Custom Composites of Fort Pierce, Fla, handled the development work for the stunning cataraman.

With out-of-the-box propellers and more dialing in to be done, the 44-footer reportedly has reached 115 mph and cruises effortlessly at 95 to 100 mph. According to Curran, the boat performed perfectly and delivered a smooth ride in three- to four-foot seas during its first sea trial with veteran offshore racer and Iconic Marine Group’s Billy Moore at the helm.

“I think this boat is cool as hell,” said Curran. “In the two forward buckets, you feel like you’re in a raceboat and you’re protected from the wind. But in all four of the buckets behind them, everyone also is protected from the wind and everyone has great forward visibility. You’re not getting blasted by the wind. You can talk to each other while you’re running.

“The back of the boat is what happens after you get to your destination,” he continued. “You have so much space—it adds another dimension of luxury. The Donzi Icon 44 is going to be a centerpiece, wherever it goes. You put it at the docks of the Conch Republic during the Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run and there will be more people on it than looking at it.”
