Fiore Leads 2015 Shootout Hall of Fame Inductees

It’s no surprise that Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats founder Mike Fiore leads this year’s list of inductees into the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Hall of Fame. The fact that Fiore died following an infamous accident at the 2014 event in Central Missouri made him an obvious selection, but he was a candidate long before the crash thanks to dozens of Outerlimits-built boats taking home class honors during the past 20 years of the event, not to mention his and Joe Sgro’s 152-mph run in 2013—the fastest V-bottom mark in Shootout history—in Sgro’s SV 43, which later went on to set a kilo run record at 180 mph.

Fiore, who left behind three children at age 44, will be recognized along with three longtime Shootout supporters—Dustin Hancock, Justin Martin and Steve Wallace—at the third annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Hall of Fame dinner on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Stables at Cannon Smoked Saloon in Gravois Mills, Mo.

“On behalf of the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Board of Directors and the more than 700 volunteers who will participate in the 2015 Shootout, we’re excited to welcome four extremely deserving individuals into the Shootout Hall of Fame,” said Shootout president Ron Duggan, who said tickets for the dinner are $25 per person and reservations can be made by calling his office at 573-374-8400. “We always try to honor individuals who have done so much to not only participate in this event, but to make sure it is organized and kept safe. Each inductee into the Hall of Fame has had and continues to have the true meaning of the Shootout in their hearts.”

Hancock, the son of Gravois Fire Protection District Chief Ed Hancock, a 2014 Hall of Fame inductee, has been volunteering at the Shootout since a few years after his father started volunteering in 1993. By 1998 the current battalion chief with Lake Ozark Fire Protection District was one of the patrol boat operators, a position he coveted for 15 years.

Martin first volunteered for the Shootout in 2003 and joined the start boat crew in 2004 where he has continued to serve for the last decade. The St. Louis native volunteers as an EMT/fireman for the Lake Ozark Fire Protection District and as a division chief of training for the Rocky Mount Fire Protection District.

A longtime Shootout participant—in fact this will be his 21st year representing Advanced Marine, the business he co-owns in Rocky Mount—Wallace has achieved quite a lot in his career as a marine technician specializing in performance boats. He’s won his class at the Shootout 18 times, drove Dave Scott’s 36- and 46-foot Anheuser Busch-backed Skater Powerboats catamarans down the course, and crewed and raced with Scott at other events. But last year was the icing on the cake as Wallace clocked 120 mph in Advanced Marine’s 1994 28-foot Skater to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his first Shootout in the same 20-year-old Skater.

Duggan said the evening will include a video presentation by Lake TV and George Denny with highlights from previous Shootouts and a slideshow presentation of the inductees. Of course there will be a special tribute to Fiore.

“Mike left us all too early—he’ll never be replaced in the go-fast boating world and, more important, he’ll never be replaced in the hearts of those who knew and loved him,” said Duggan, adding that there will be several Fiore tributes throughout the week, including recognition on the event T-shirts, an “in memory” graphic on all of the registered raceboat stickers and a missing man flyover on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Not only will the four inductees be honored at the dinner, they’ll be forever recognized in the Bob Morgan Memorial Hall of Fame with their name on a bronze plaque installed on the Hall of Fame wall located at Captain Ron’s, the home of the Shootout.
