First Outerlimits 36 Slated for Testing This Week

The first sea trial of the new Super Leggera 36 stepped hull V-bottom from Outerlimits could happen as early as this evening if the Bristol, R.I., custom high-performance powerboat builder finishes final rigging of the boat today as planned. The 36-footer is being outfitted with twin Mercury Racing 520 engines, the company’s latest offerings, that come standard with Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) and the Fond du Lac, Wis., engine builder’s first-ever two-year limited factory warranty.

“We’re hoping it will run in the mid-90s,” said Dan Kleitz of Outerlimits.

Scheduled for testing this week, the SL 36 is the latest offering from Outerlimits.

Performance Boat Center of Camdenton, Mo., will be the exclusive dealer for the open-cockpit SL 36. Retail list price for the boat with 520 engine power will be in the low to middle $400,000 range. While the 36-footer will, like all Outerlimits models, be offered with a range of options, those options will be more limited than they are with the company’s larger offerings.

“The 36 is a bit of a change in direction for Outerlimits—it’s a high-end custom boat that is fairly standardized,” said Mike Fiore, the founder and owner of Outerlimits. “We realize that to expand our market share we need to develop some products that are not just for the uber-rich or extremely wealthy. We want to try to reach a much broader audience as the economy improves and people have more money. The 36 is the first ‘semi-production’ boat for us. We took everything learned from the 29 and put it into the 36. It’s a three-piece, highly engineered boat.”
