Courtesy Florida Powerboat ClubIn the midst of planning for my trip to the Emerald Coast Poker Run in August, I put a call into Stu Jones, owner and founder of the Florida Powerboat Club, which is once again organizing the 20th annual event in the Destin/Fort Walton Beach area.

During our conversation, I asked Jones about the club’s upcoming poker run to the Bahamas and I was immediately envious. The Bahamas Poker Run to the Bimini Bay Resort & Marina takes place June 21-24, but Jones will be heading over to the Bimini Islands early this weekend in Clubhouse, his Cruiser Yachts 40 Express.

Jones said he plans to enjoy the weekend and make sure everything is squared away for the 57-mile journey from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini, which departs on Thursday, June 21 from the Hyatt Regency.

Once at the islands, participants will be treated to first-class facilities and entertainment, as well as plenty of activities from scenic cruising and anchoring on pristine sandy beaches to deep-sea fishing and shipwreck and reef snorkeling.

According to the club website, the 21st annual Bahamas Poker Run marks a milestone in the Florida Powerboat Club’s history. It was in May of 1992, that Sunny Isles Powerboat Club departed from Haulover Inlet, with a small group of boats headed for Bimini. That cruise proved to be an historic excursion, as it set the stage for a long and colorful history of boating adventures to follow under the Florida Powerboat Club umbrella.

Here’s to another safe and fun run to the Bahamas again…both trips for Mr. Jones!
