Formula Discontinuing FAS3Tech Sportboat Line

In what any longtime observer of the high-performance powerboat world would call the end of an era, Formula Boats is shelving its FAS³Tech line of stepped-hull V-bottom sportboats. Scott Smith, the company’s longtime marketing manager, announced the move by the Decatur, Ind., company today.

Formula no longer offers its FAS3Tech V-bottom sportboat line of stepped hull models from 27 to 41 feet.

The company finished and shipped its final 382 model yesterday.

“We have officially dropped the FAS³Tech models from our line for the 2020 model year,” said Smith. “That portion of our production mix has been outpaced by our other segments.”

With models from 27 to 41 feet, the FAS³Tech series was introduced in 1997 and replaced the former conventional V-bottom Formula SR-1 sportboat line in 1998. Not only did the FAS³Tech offerings ride on stepped hulls, they were built with the company’s stronger and lighter fiberglass grid skeleton, which replaced the traditional wood-based stringer system found in the SR-1 line.

According to Smith, Formula built five FAS³Tech 38-footers, two 35-footers and two 29-footers in the 2018/2019 model year.

“A quick bit of math says that is not the bulk of our production,” he said. “The pure go-fast segment is no longer the driver of our business it was. I remember back when I started (with Formula) in 1988, I think the SR-1 and sportboat models were a third of our business, but times change.

“Our performance heritage lives on in the FAS³Tech hull you will find on all Super Sport, Super Sport Crossover and All Sport Crossover models we build,” he added.
