Produced by the Florida Vintage Raceboat Club, last weekend’s Spring Regatta on Lake Dora in Tavares, Fla., attracted an array of yesteryear’s most exotic and elegant raceboats from the likes of Switzer and Lauterbach. And speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden was on hand to capture all the action created by approximately 60 boats from hydroplanes to speed skiffs.

Though the event is an exhibition it is not without its share of drama. During one of the mock competitions, a vintage-tunnel boat piloted by owner Jeff Kent blew over and was all but destroyed. Kent walked away from the wreck, but rebuilding the former beauty will be a formidable task.

“So sad, especially since it was the boat’s first time on the water since the owner restored it,” Boden said.

The weekend did not end well for this recently restored tunnel boat (click image to enlarge).

Rich Luhrs, the American Power Boat Association Offshore Commission chairman and a Florida Vintage Raceboat Club officer, was on hand for the event.

“It was the largest turnout we’ve ever had,” said Luhrs, who will recap the happening in a speedonthewater.com story tomorrow. “We had a great time.”
