Gallery Of The Week, Part 2: Lake Michigan Goes Bimini—And More

Following up on Friday’s action, a fine group of passionate high-performance powerboat enthusiasts took to the waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix yesterday for a casual fun run from Boyne City, Mich., to Grand Traverse Bay. And once again it was among the coolest gatherings of go-fast boating enthusiasts to hit the water so far this year.

But Lake Michigan was in a different mood yesterday and showed some colors that were reminiscent of the swimming-pool waters of Bimini, the small and closest (to the United State) island in the Bahamas. Of course, Lake Michigan being Lake Michigan, that mood, and the water colors, changed a few times during the day.

“The intended route was down to Grand Traverse Bay and around Power Island,” said Pete Boden, speedonthewater.com’s chief photographer, who captured the action. “Not everyone came down quite that far, but we got shots of those who did.”

Among those who enjoyed the informal fun run this weekend was Michigan’s own Burton Kirsten. A true, unassuming gentleman of endless generosity who owns Jet, a 46-foot Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats creation well-chronicled on speedonthewater.com, Kirsten was ecstatic at the turnout—and the devoted folks who made it all happen.

“I am very proud of the people who came in support—Team Nor-Tech, Team Skater, Team Outerlimits and more,” he said. “John and Julie Tokar put this together and John had tears in his eyes when he left. He’s a real leader.”

Simply spectacular.
