Going In Style
In the San Francisco Bay area—the place I call home—the Major League Baseball Giants are a big deal. That’s not surprising given their World Series Championships in 2010 and 2012 and that, at this writing, they have the best record in baseball. They also lead the Los Angeles Dodgers, their arch National League rivals to the south, by almost nine games.
Yes, I’m gloating.
So a few weeks back—OK, Sunday, May 25 to put a fine point on it—I’m watching a Giants game on television at a sports bar with one of my best friends, who is a total baseball nut, and my girlfriend. The Giants are crushing the Twins 7-1, so I’m paying more attention to my companions and the heavily painted lady in the Carmen Miranda hat talking to herself at the end of the bar than the game.
Suddenly, every TV screen in the bar fills with Gone Again, a 37-foot canopied Talon catamaran owned by Rick Bowling, leaving McCovey Cove behind AT&T Park and, once clear of the Slow-Speed Zone, rocketing into San Francisco Bay.
