Gone Again ‘Doubtful’ for Lake of the Ozarks Shootout

After experiencing a yet-to-be determined issue with the port engine of his 32-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran during the GLOC Performance Boat Challenge Shootout in Oklahoma earlier this month, Gone Again team owner Kenny Mungle said it is very unlikely he’ll compete in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in late August. A fan favorite, the well-known top-speed shootout specialist has cancelled his housing and boat slip reservations for the annual event on the Missouri waterway.

“I’m doubtful that we’ll be able to attend,” said Mungle, who recently had emergency dental surgery that forced him to opt out of his planned participation in this weekend’s Offshore Powerboat Association St. Clair River Classic race in Gone Again/STIHL, his Skater 388 offshore raceboat. “To be honest, I don’t know what I’m doing next. We’re kind of in limbo.”

Mungle’s engine woes appeared on the second day of competition during the GLOC event in Oklahoma. During that day, he and cockpit partner Michael Lee Lockwood saw “fuel pressure spikes,” and their final run ended early with a puff of blue smoke.

“We’ve done a leak-down and a compression test and they came back good, so I don’t think we really hurt anything,” Mungle said. “I think the intercooler might have blown out. But that slowed us down in our preparation for the (Lake of the Ozarks) Shootout.

“Right now, we don’t intend to make the event,” he added. “Will that change? I’m not sure, but I’m doubtful. I’m not sure what’s next for us. I have to look at the calendar, and then we can start getting a plan together.”
