Gone Again to Compete in Key West Worlds

While their earlier plans in this their rookie offshore racing season didn’t include a trip to the Super Boat International Offshore World Championships (Nov. 6-13) in Key West, Fla., Kenny Mungle and Michael Lee Lockwood of the Gone Again team will compete in the upcoming event. Mungle and Lockwood reportedly made their decision to race at the famed venue after a solid showing at the SBI National Championships in Clearwater, Fla.

Gone Again, a Skater Powerboats 388 catamaran with twin Frank McComas-built 750-hp engines, finished in fifth place out of seven boats boats in the Clearwater Superboat-class fleet More important, Mungle and Lockwood completed all 19 laps and gained confidence throughout the race. It was the team’s third offshore race this season.

“It was pretty awesome,” said Mungle. “Of course, we always wish we’d finished farther ahead, but I think we did pretty good. At the end of the race, we were told we were only two to three seconds per lap behind (Clearwater event Superboat-class winner) Cleveland Construction. And they walked away with it.”

Mungle said that he and his cockpit partner plan to conservatively approach the three days of racing—Wednesday, Friday and Sunday—at the SBI Key West Worlds.

“We are planning on racing on the days when it’s not super rough,” he said. “Me and Lee and the whole crew are going down.”
