Hayim In For Long Island Run in Early August, Out for Aronow Event

In a telephone interview less 30 minutes ago, Stuart Hayim, the well-known retired multi-time offshore racing champion who led the Recovery racing team in the mid 1980s and 1990s, said he would still try to set a new Around Long Island record—but not during the Don Aronow Memorial Race Around Long Island on Sept. 22.

Hayim, who campaigned several Recovery team boats during his ten-year offshore racing career, will attempt to set a new Around Long Island event in early August.

Hayim, who campaigned several Recovery team boats during his 10-year offshore racing career, will attempt to set a new Around Long Island record in early August.

“We’re ready to go August 8, 9 or 10, whenever the weather allows,” said Hayim. “I just got off the phone with Billy Frenz (head of the National Powerboat Association, the sanctioning body behind the Aronow Memorial event) a few hours ago and told him that we changed our plans and are going to do it sooner.

“They (the entrants in the Sept. 22 event) can chase our record after we set it,” Hayim added, and laughed.

According to Hayim, the NPBA, via Frenz, will sanction and verify his record run—if he sets a new record—which he plans to do with ace throttleman John Tomlinson in a 42-foot Marine Technology, Inc., catamaran with twin Mercury Racing 1350 engines.
