Hayim Readying For Long Island Record Attempt

Multi-time offshore racing world champion Stuart Hayim is preparing to break the around-Long Island powerboating record of 2 hours and 11 minutes he set on August 8, 2012 (read the story) with throttleman John Tomlinson in a 42-foot Marine Technology Inc. (MTI) catamaran powered by Mercury Racing 1350 engines. Tomlinson will join Hayim in the cockpit again, but this time around they’ll be running Hayim’s new 52-foot MTI cat powered by Mercury Racing 1650 engines. Their goal is to complete the 270-mile circumnavigation of the New York island in less than two hours.

Hayim and Tomlinson are shooting to break their own record at some point during a two-week waiting period for an optimal weather window this month. As he did in 2012, Hayim is planning on enlisting his NFL New York Jets connections—this time Jets coach Rex Ryan—for the fundraising element of the run. The beneficiary charity of choice will be either the Don Monti Cancer Center at The North Shore University Hospital that saved his life—Hayim is a cancer survivor—or the Alliance For Lupus Research, the organization supported by coach Ryan.

“I originally called coach Ryan and he said, ‘I’m in!’ but when I told Johnny Tomlinson about it he was a little, uh, ‘concerned’ that the coach would be sitting on 400 gallons of extra fuel,” said Hayim via a telephone interview in late June. “So we’re not sure what form the fundraiser part of this will take. Maybe we’ll auction rides with the coach on the boat, maybe we’ll do something else. I’m still looking into the best way to do it.”

Among the trickiest aspects with Ryan is timing. The coach has a deadline of July 15 before he heads to the Jets training camp.

The National Power Boat Association will again provide timing and sanctioning for the run as it did for Hayim in two years ago. In 2011, the NPBA provided sanctioning/timing for Joe Cibellis and Joe Sgro, who set a then-new record of 3 hours and 6 minutes in an Outerlimits SV43 V-bottom with twin 725-hp Ilmor engines.

“I have sanctioned that run for a lot of people over years,” said Billy Frenz, the president of the NPBA, who officially announced Hayim’s basic plans in an email this morning. “Just making it around Long Island without breaking down is quite a feat, let alone at the pace Stuart and Johnny plan to set.”
