Indmar 2.3-Liter EcoBoost Engine Wins Innovation Award In Miami

Producing a remarkable 310 hp and 350 foot-pounds of torque, the new Indmar Marine 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine earned an Innovation Award from Boating Writers International and the National Marine Manufacturers Association at the Miami International Boat Show this week. Available this summer in Indmar engine-powered tow boats, the Ford-based, in-line four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant produces 135 hp per liter of displacement and is the tow-boat world’s first turbocharged offering.

Small but mighty, Indmar’s 2.3L EcoBoost engine earned an Innovation Award in Miami this week.

“EcoBoost is a proven technology that continues to break new ground and today it’s opening new doors in the marine industry,” said Jason Stimmel, Indmar’s vice president of engineering, in a press release from the Millington, Tenn., company. “The 2.3L EcoBoosts’ patent-pending technology delivers the most advanced engine technologies available in a marine engine, providing consumers the most from a small engine footprint with the performance equal to or greater than a V-8.”

The turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) gasoline engine incorporates three fuel-saving and performance enhancing technologies into one engine design: forced air induction via turbocharging, power-maximizing direct fuel injection and variable cam timing. Boost pressure at peak power and torque output is 22 psi, according to an Indmar representative. As part of the marinization process, Indmar developed a water-to-air intercooler and a stainless steel exhaust shield for the closed-cooled (glycol) 2.3-liter mill.

While Indmar’s The 2.3L EcoBoost engine is a tow-boat-specific product, the technology could have farther-reaching applications in the marine world as Ford recently announced the release of a 7.3-liter V-8 engine platform.

“We are honored to be recognized and awarded by the NMMA and BWI for Innovation,” Stimmel in the release. “The award would not have been possible without the dedication and collaboration of our entire engineering and product development team.”
