Image of the Week: Atlantic City Reflections

What a difference a year makes. In the 2012, the New Jersey Performance Powerboat Club’s Atlantic City Poker run started under blue skies and ended in a fierce squall. This time around, the event—the kick-off for the inaugural Atlantic City Festival of Speed—in mid-June began and ended in flawless weather.

Photographer Tim Sharkey shot the run the run this year and last, and he appreciated the great conditions as much, and maybe even a little more, as anyone. That’s because sunlight is kind of important for colorful powerboat photography, and this time around he had plenty of it.

Among the images Sharkey captured was this stunner of NJPPC club member Steve Monteforte running his 39-foot Outerlimits with a couple of guests on board. While the action in the image is relatively tame, the reflections on the boat and the water are spectacular.

“Even though it isn’t a great ‘air shot,’ I think the reflections of the colors from the boat make up for that,” said Sharkey, who shot the run from a helicopter. “So much has to do with timing and pure luck. I have been trying to land a decent shot of this particular boat for years and nothing materialized. Finally, it did.”

We couldn’t agree more.
