Image of the Week: Cockpit To Cockpit

Thousands of great images came back from last weekend’s Pirates Of Lanier Poker Run and likely thousands more are on the way, but this unusual shot by photographer Craig Waller is our favorite so far. We’ve spent more than our share of time in helicopters with photographers and this image perfectly captures the adrenaline rush and moment of helicopter-to-boat closeness.

The only thing missing, of course, is the roar of engine and wind noise in both cockpits. Photographing running powerboats from the air is noisy and intimate business, as Gary Goodell and his friends in his Caveman 38′ Top Gun from Cigarette Racing Team can attest. But in crowded cockpits—boat and helicopter—the experience is like no other.
