Image of the Week: Cocoa Beach Mayhem Revisited

Last year’s Super Boat International offshore race in Cocoa Beach, Fla., boasted some of the roughest water conditions of the 2013 regular season, and with this year’s Cocoa Beach event just a few days away we’d thought we’d take a look back. Call it the speedonthewater.com version of Facebook’s “Throwback Thursday.”

How was rough was last year’s race? Said Superboat-class winner Billy Mauff of WHM Motorsports after the event, “On a scale of 1 to 10, the conditions today were a 12—but it was the right water for my boat.” For Mauff, who’s raced for the better part of three decades, that’s a big statement.

For this Sunday’s race, the National Weather Service is calling for a mostly sunny day with a high near 81 degrees and—more important for the offshore competitors—northeast winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Though it might not match last year’s “Victory at Sea Conditions,” it could make for some high-flying action once again.
