Image of the Week: Five Showstoppers

You can always count on the Miami International Boat Show for a few outrageous surprises. Last year’s show was no exception, and chief among the wild new-model introductions at the event was the Cigarette Racing Team 42’ Mistress with five 350-hp Mercury Racing Verado supercharged outboard engines. Without question, it was a showstopper.

Naturally, photographer Jay Nichols was in the Cigarette display to snap a stunning and unusual rearview shot of the 42-footer the moment it was unveiled. And Nichols caught more than five brawny outboards reflecting the convention center lights—he captured the excitement and buzz of yet another fine Miami Show moment.

“I love what Skip Braver said, ‘Because six wouldn’t fit,’ when someone asked him why they used five outboards,” Nichols recalled. “It was one of those moments that sticks with you, the first time seeing that beast with quints hanging there. Only Cigarette. Wow.”

Chances are good there will be “Wow” for Nichols and everyone else moment at the 2013 Miami show next month. For all we know one or two might even happen at the Cigarette display. Again.
