Somewhere beneath 2019 Boyne Thunder Poker Run participants Ken Greskowiak and Chris Hayes there is a Fountain sportboat. You just can’t see it because Lake Michigan is doing what Lake Michigan often does—get big, confused and nasty.

Speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden took this photo during what was originally planned to be the Thursday lunch run to Bay Harbor to kick off the 16th annual Northern Michigan event earlier this month. For obvious reasons, the lunch run was scrubbed. But that didn’t stop a few brave souls from making exploratory runs into unruly waters, only to return to the safety of Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix.

To their credit, calmer heads prevailed.
