Image of the Week: Jersey Strong Flies High

At beaches around the country, aircraft-towed billboards are a summer staple. Coppertone. GEICO. Anything that needs selling is fair game in the sky. But this one, which photographer Tim Sharkey captured last week above the New Jersey Shore, has taken on special meaning since Hurricane Sandy’s devastation.

Sure, the billboard in this image advertises a fitness club. But “Jersey Strong” has become the motto, at least among the state’s go-fast boat crowd.  At least week’s Super Boat International Key West Offshore World Championship, I heard it again and again. One of my New Jersey buddies, a fun-loving but generally conservative executive who works in the button-downed corporate world, even contemplated getting those words tattooed on his bicep. Better judgment prevailed, but not without some gentle persuasion from a friend.

Fly high, Jersey Strong because you need to and because you’re capable of it—and because those of us who know and love you expect nothing less.
