Image Of The Week: Maritimo XCAT At Sea

After a two-year pandemic-forced hiatus, the seven-round Union Motonautique International XCAT World Championship Series is slated to return March 26-27 in the Middle East. Among the teams in the mix will be Australia-based Maritimo Racing with Aussie Tom Barry-Cotter and Norwegian Pal Virik Nilsen. The cockpit duo will be “renewing their successful partnership” of 15 year ago, according to a press release from Maritimo, in the team’s R30 catamaran powered by Mercury Racing ROS outboard engines.

The release included several breathtaking images of the Maritimo raceboat on the water. But none are as starkly dramatic as one of the Maritimo cat running in the open ocean, which made it an easy choice for our Image of the Week.

The XCAT series has experienced ups and down during the years, but then, find us a form of offshore powerboat racing that hasn’t. Internal drama and economic woes are part and parcel of the sport in all of its expressions. Still, like fans all over the world, we are delighted to see the return of XCAT competition and we look forward to reporting on it.
