Image Of The Week: Mean Green Flying Machine

For the past two years, speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden has organized and then flat-out nailed a New Year’s Eve photo shoot in Sarasota, Fla., in advance of the Joey Gratton Memorial New Year’s Day Fun. Boden’s images from those photo sessions have almost an embarrassment of riches, so to speak, for us. Of course, we’ll take them.

As we continue to work through all of his images from that shoot, we keep finding gems. Case in point is this shot of Troy and Chastity Curry’s green-and-white 28-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran—powered by a pair of 300-hp Mercury Marine OptiMax outboards—in low-level flight above the green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Currys brought the 28-footer from their home Key West, Fla., for all the New Year’s happenings in Sarasota. They’ve owned the boat, which formerly belonged to Jim and Patty Kirkland of Crystal River, Fla., for two years.

In terms of color-matching, Boden couldn’t have done any better with this photo. Of course, the boat and water colors were out of his control—call them a happy accident. But from angle to exposure, all of the other elements of this stunning image we’re very much in it.
