Image of the Week, Part II: GEICO versus Broadco

While late starts for last Sunday’s first two offshore races and a 5 p.m. permit deadline forced the organizers to cut the third race of the Offshore Powerboat Association’s recent event in Long Beach, New York, to just two laps, that didn’t’ stop the Miss GEICO and Broadco catamarans from duking it in out in the Extreme class, which is bracketed to 135 mph, while they could. Powered by Mercury Racing 1650 engines, the GEICO team’s 44-foot Victory cat reportedly bested the Broadco team’s 40-foot Marine Technology, Inc. cat in the abbreviated race.

“It’s a shame the race had to end so early,” said Marc Granet, the driver of Miss GEICO. “We had a good race going, and there were a ton of spectators on the beach. The sun was down low and it was beautiful.”

Limited as his late-afternoon shooting opportunity was, photographer Tim Sharkey didn’t waste a moment and snagged this great shot of the two cats running deck to deck.
