Image of the Week Part II: Monsters on a Transom in Texas

Looking like three killer mutants from a B-grade horror movie, the triple 300-hp Mercury Verado outboard engines on the back of this Cigarette center console caught the eye of photographer Jay Nichols during this weekend’s Texas Outlaw Challenge. Naturally, the Naples, Fla.-based shooter couldn’t resist taking a few shots of the shrink-wrapped outboards—as usual his eye for weird stuff and playful sense of humor didn’t fail him.

“Kind of a strange shot, isn’t it?” said Nichols. “I didn’t get around the front of the boat to see which Cigarette it was—I was too caught up in shooting the outboards. They look a little scary, don’t they?”

Joining Nichols in his coverage of this weekend’s event in the Houston area was speedonthewater.com co-publisher/executive editor Jason Johnson. Johnson hauled speedonthewater.com’s new promotional trailer all the way from California. Like Nichols, he produced frequent updates (See “Related Stories” below) on the event—by all accounts a winner—since he arrived.

Nichols and Johnson saw the best of the best during the Texas Outlaw Challenge and they were awestruck. But that didn’t stop them from appreciating the strange and unusual.
