Image of the Week, Part III: One Down, 2,400 to Go

By the time photographer Jay Nichols was done shooting the first day of speed runs during last weekend’s Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Missouri, he had something like 2,400 digital photos on a slew of memory cards. But shooting, as any professional photographer will tell you, is only part—the fun part—of the job.

As I write this, Nichols is still organizing and editing his way through all of those images and more, including those from the second day of the Shootout and all the catamarans on display during the weekend at the Camden on the Lake Resort, and chances are he won’t be done by the end of the week. Still, Nichols managed to find time to send this image of the My Way turbine-powered Mystic catamaran running a “casual” 209 mph in its second run on Saturday, before it laid down its record-blowing, mind-bending 224-mph run the following morning.

“I got everything—I didn’t miss a single run,” Nichols told me Friday night when we met for a drink at H. Toads on the Camden property. “It’s going to be hell to sort through all them, brother, but I know I didn’t miss anything so I’m happy.”

We are pleased Mr. Nichols took the time to send us this fine image, a study in red, white and green. And now it’s time for him to get back to editing and sorting. After all, he has work to do, and some of it is near and dear to our hearts as it’s for the Shootout coverage in upcoming Sept./Oct. issue of Speed On The Water digital magazine, which will go live by the end of next week. So get to work, Jay.
