Image of the Week: Peace On The Water

Do sunsets get any better than those over the water? Not from my perspective, but then I grew up in a Southern California beach town. Surfing, fishing and diving—being on and in the water was my life. In many ways, not the least of which is professional, it still is.

I burned out on diving and eventually moved too far inland to sustain a serious surfing or fishing habit. I miss those activities, but you know what I miss even more? Sunsets over the water.

Whether you’re in Key West or Malibu—or even Solomons, Md., where photographer Tim Sharkey captured this image—sunsets on the water are the stuff of pure and peaceful magic.

The high-performance powerboat world has been anything but peaceful of late. Tragedies tend to trigger strong emotions and debate, and both are essential in a world that wants and needs to do better moving forward. But sometimes taking a breath and break from the intensity is just as essential. Sometimes you need a moment of peace, and a moment to remind you why, beyond the thrill of going fast, you love being on the water.
