Image of the Week: Skater Drag Race

So here’s something you don’t see every day. A pair of 38-foot Skater Powerboats catamarans “drag racing” behind a houseboat. Yes that is Bill Pyburn’s 388 Skater Pure Platinum (left) and Mike Thornton’s Frisky Business 388 (right) under tow on Kentucky’s Lake Cumberland. It appears to me that Pure Platinum has a slight lead.

Captured by Fallon Thibodeaux, Pyburn’s significant other, as the cats were being towed by Thornton’s houseboat from Conley Bottom Resort to Lake Cumberland State Dock in 2012, the image shows off a different side of boating and one of the reasons the Lake Cumberland Poker Run is so popular.

Thibodeaux said that each year, a large group of poker run participants tie up their performance boats to several houseboats and make the four- to five-hour pull to State Dock. It’s become a fun part of the event festivities for Pyrburn, Thibodeaux and company where they can hang out, cook, drink and socialize the entire way.

Sign me up. That sounds like a great way to kick off a poker run.
