Image Of The Week: Skater, Party Of Five

As many diehards around the country will proclaim, it’s a Skater Nation. And judging by this picture taken earlier this week, it sure is at Custom Performance in Somerset, Ky.

Situated on the left—proudly displayed on tilt trailers built by the talented team at Skater Powerboats in Douglas, Mich.—are a trio of Skater 388 catamarans. The white and blue one, the first eight-seat 38-footer, is owned by Louisiana’s Dave and James Branton, who, as of this week, are now the former owners of Voodoo, the blue and black beauty on the end. The dark red one in between, of course, is Pure Platinum, which is owned by Nikki Pierce, the wife of the late Michael Pierce.

And the two on the right—the non-tilted boats—include James Branton’s latest ride—a 32-foot Skater he purchased last week (read the story)—and Carl Wesley’s gorgeous 46-footer that just recently went up for sale.

According to Denny Kirkland, who started Custom Performance 10 years ago, he also has a Cigarette Racing Team 38 Top Gun in for service at the shop, but it didn’t really fit with the “Skaters only” image. However, it would—after seeing the image at right Kirkland shared from almost a decade ago—fit in better with the boats Kirkland originally worked on.

“It feels good to see all those boats siting there like that,” Kirkland said. “The business has come a long way—it’s hard to believe it’s 10 years. Then again, I’m tired because it’s been a busy 10 years.”
