Image of the Week: St. Clair In The Air

Last weekend’s Flight Club Skaterfest on the St. Clair River in Michigan attracted a typically stunning fleet of Skater Powerboats catamarans. Among them was this 388 Skater powered by twin 1,550-hp Sterling Performance engines. Owned by Ron Szolack, the well-known Michigan-based performance boat enthusiast who owns a small fleet of exotic go-fast rides, this 38-footer had no trouble turning the waters of the St. Clair River into roostertail mist.

Szolack drove the white-hot Skater in the event. For a throttleman, he turned to Vinny Rifice of the Talk ‘N Trash offshore racing team that competes on the Offshore Powerboat Association circuit.

Photographer Jay Nichols captured Szolack and Rifice throwing a little water into the air shortly after the event’s Saturday lunch stop at Pepper Joe’s.

“They were just getting started running down the St. Clair River,” Nichols said. “You can always count on Skaterfest for some pretty amazing photo opportunities, and this one certainly didn’t disappoint.”
