Image of the Week: What The Hull?

Since returning from the Super Boat International Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla., last week we’ve been culling through hundreds of images for our upcoming digital and 2016 Year In Review print edition magazines. Of course, most of the photos capture offshore racing action, but we also have plenty from the Florida Powerboat Club’s Key West Poker Run fleet. It’s an embarrassment of riches from Pete Boden, our chief photographer, as well as contributing photographer (and stalwart speedonthewater.com supporter) Yvonne Aleman.

Aleman sent us more than 250 images, mostly of performance-boat enthusiasts and their incredible rides, but the image above jumped out immediately. Check out the port hullside of the Cigarette 42 Huntress above. Thanks to the color of the boat and the water, combined with an amazing reflection, it’s hard to know where the water ends and the hull begins. It’s a trick of the eye, of course, but a good one.

Come January, you’ll be able catch the work of photographers Pete Boden, Yvonne Aleman, Jay Nichols, Tim Sharkey and many others in our 164-page oversized annual print magazine, which will celebrate the best of everything in the performance boating world this year. But before then, we have a lot of photo editing to do. And believe it or not, we’re grateful that our contributing photographers—as you can see from this Image of the Week—make it so damn hard.
