Image of the Week: Mercury World

For the first time in three years, Mercury Racing didn’t “pull the sheet” off a new engine at the Miami International Boat Show. That’s not to say the Fond Du Lac, Wis., high-performance marine engine company didn’t introduce a new engine—the 540 model was released on the opening day of the show last week—but there was no celebratory unveiling as there was with the company’s 1,650-, 1,350- and 1,100-hp models.

Regardless, as this photo from photographer Jay Nichols shows, the Mercury Marine exhibit was as spectacular—and maybe even a little more—as ever. From a host of stern-drive engines and venerable K-planes to an array of outboards and the latest generation of digital Zero Effort controls, the Mercury product lines were enough to fill the company’s giant display.

“That was one heck of a booth, wasn’t it?” said Nichols. “I shot it from a platform in a booth across the aisle. I had to get elevated just to capture most of it.

“You started looking at all the stuff they had and it was just amazing,” he added. “All I could think of was the team of people they must need to bring with them to pull it all together. It must be like a village.”
