Images of the Week: Name Game

names-11

Think Skater—the name and logo not the product—and something immediately jumps to mind, right? Think Cigarette Racing Team or Mercury Racing and the same thing happens. No doubt, the better you know the high-performance marine industry, the better you know the companies within it. But when it comes to the design of their own brand names and logos, the most marketing-savvy companies create something that we instantly recognize as that brand and nothing else. Though I’m far from a marketing expert, it’s something I think the go-fast marine world does well.

So just for fun last weekend, I spent some time searching the Flckr galleries of photographer Jay Nichols for distinctive font styling and logos in company names from the powerboat industry. To keep the task manageable, I limited my research to Nichols’ Miami International Boat Show image sets from 2010 through 2014. In a few instances, I had to get a little creative to find what I wanted without showing too much of the product.

Without question, you’ll recognize every brand—even a few that don’t qualify as go-fast marine—you find in the slideshow above. But chances are good that you’ll also recognize each name for its distinct design logo, which is mission accomplished for the graphic artists who created them.
