Inside SOTW Mag: Stars Of The Show

For four out of the past five years since the Miami International Boat Show has been held at Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key, speedonthewater.com has hosted an invitational Friday morning photo shoot for high- performance powerboat builders. Challenging
as it can be given everyone’s time constraints— because every boat needs to back at the docks by 10 a.m. when the show opens—it’s worth the effort. Not only has speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden captured exclusive running shots of everything from the first Wright Performance Powerboats 420 catamaran and the one-of-a-kind Skater Powerboats 478 V-bottom to the Cigarette Racing Team 59 Tirranna super console and the canopied Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats Jet 46-foot catamaran, those images “feed” our annual Year In Review collectible print magazine.

Pretty performers from a 39-foot center console from Deep Impact to a Wright Performance 420 catamaran took center stage during the annual speedonthewater.com invitational Miami Boat Show photo shoot in mid-February. Photo by Pete Boden copyright speedonthewater.com/Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

In those four years—we couldn’t pull it off in 2016 when the show first moved from the Miami Beach Convention Center to its current venue— the builders involved have gone from, “OK, we’ll try to be out there” to “What time do we need to be out there Friday morning?” Among many go-fast powerboat builders, our annual photo shoot has become a much-desired happening.

That’s a function of results, and of course, and we credit those to Boden and helicopter pilot extraordinaire Paul Barth. Both excel at their jobs and waste no time getting them done, which is essential given the short window they have to get everything shot and back to the docks in an hour.

This year, the photo shoot fleet translated to 13 boats from Deep Impact, Fountain Powerboats, Hustler Powerboats, Jaguar Powerboats, MTI, Mystic Powerboats, Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats, Skater Powerboats and Wright Performance. We’re pretty certain it’s the most boats we’ve ever had for a single hour-long photo session, and it just might be the coolest fleet of models for a shoot. And we’re including the countless Powerboat magazine test and photography sessions we participated in during the years we worked for the monthly publication before starting speedonthewater.com.

But you’ll be the judge of that. Now, enjoy the stars of the show.
