Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Day 2 Highlights: Top Guns All Around

With 16 different boats topping 150 mph—and more than 90 boats making runs along the one-mile course—there was quite a showing of crowd-pleasing high-performance boats at the 2015 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout.

Led by the overall Top Gun winner—Don Onken’s American Ethanol 51-foot Mystic Powerboats catamaran, which posted its 208-mph top speed on Saturday with Myrick Coil on the wheel and John Cosker on the throttles—the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon featured an exceptional group of participants from across the country battling for class championships and bragging rights.

In typical fashion for the Sunday portion of the event, the spectator attendance was less than half of the Saturday turnout as many people head home on Sunday to get ready for the work/school week. But that doesn’t mean the Sunday’s festivities were any less exciting.

Gary Smith of Tucson, Ariz., logged a pair of 184-mph runs in his beautiful Skater Powerboats catamaran, Predator, powered by twin Brummett Marine engines.

“On Saturday I made one run and we had an issue as the crash box popped out of gear and the motor revved up and we threw a belt,” said Smith who caravanned to the event with his friend Vern Gilbert of West Coast Drives in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. “We worked on the boat last night so it would be ready today. When we came back this morning the first run was 184 mph, the second run was 184 mph and the third one was 182 mph. I said, ‘You know what—we’re going backward so let’s stop here.’ Overall it was a good event with a great showing from the West Coast. I can’t say enough about the guys who made sure the boat was ready to go.”

Here are some more highlights from Sunday’s final day of the Shootout.

• Coil didn’t just end up getting to hold the overall Top Gun trophy, he also took home the Top Gun in the V-bottom Professional class after running the Performance Boat Center 52-foot Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats V-bottom to a top speed of 139 mph

• Fan favorite Kenny Mungle, who ran his 32-foot Skater catamaran Gone Again with Lee Lockwood by his side, laid down the second-fastest speed of the weekend with a 188-mph run. He also closed the event with a couple of back-and-forth passes on the course to show his appreciation for the crowd that cheered him on throughout the weekend.

• In impressive fashion, the father-and-son team of Jason and Dennis Parvey upped its top speed from Saturday (143 mph) to 145 mph and was extremely pleased with the performance of their Black Thunder V-bottom, which has twin 1,675-hp engines.

• Bob Bull and Randy Scism were pleased with their 183-mph run in Bull’s 52-foot MTI catamaran—it’s the fastest the teammates have run the CMS boat at the Shootout—but they seemed even more excited about a pass Scism, the owner and founder of MTI, made with Bull’s wife, Debbie, at the wheel (read the story).

• Canadian performance boater Ryan McClay upped his top speed from 92 mph to 93 mph in a Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats 39-foot center console with quad Mercury Racing Verado 400R engines, which was good for the new center console class Top Gun award.

• With three runs today in its Skater, the well-known Cat Can Do race team ended up with a respectable 176-mph top speed with Michael Holford joining CK Motorsports’ Keith Holmes in the catamaran powered by Sterling Performance engines.
