Mitcher T Painting New Sunsation 36 SSR with Twin 565s

It’s been more than a year since Sunsation Powerboats built one of its 36-foot sportboats, but thanks to an order from a second-time customer, the Algonac, Mich., company recently sent a new 36 SSR to Mitcher T Custom Painting in Middleville, Mich., for its custom graphics.

Mitcher T Custom Painting is handling the graphics on the latest 36 SSR built by Sunsation.

According to Sunsation’s Joe Schaldenbrand the boat will be back in Algonac within a week and he’s expecting to get everything else installed, rigged and ready for delivery by the end of the year.

“If Steve’s been good, maybe the boat will come on Santa’s sleigh,” Schaldenbrand laughed, referring to Pennsylvania’s Steve Ammons, who owned a 2009 32 SSR before ordering the 36-footer through Doller Offshore Marine in Hollywood, Fla. The longtime Sunsation dealer owned by Mindi Doller also helped Ammons sell his 32-footer with twin MerCruiser 496 Mag HO engines.

The new 36-footer, which is powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 565 engines, is as special as the one Ammons owned previously. Schaldenbrand said Ammons’ blue and gray 32 SSR was the company’s one-and-only Signature edition, meaning that Joe and his brother Wayne—the founders of Sunsation—signed the boat.

“Steve asked if Wayne and I would sign the new boat, so we’re going to do it again,” Schaldenbrand said. “He basically wants to duplicate his 32—the paint jobs are very similar. We’re excited to be doing this boat. It’s nice to see some sportboats coming through. We’ve been so busy with the center consoles lately.”

Ammons said the choice to step up in the Sunsation family was a no-brainer.

“You know, when you get a taste for that Sunsation quality, nothing else even comes as far as fit and finish, quality of work, and, of course, customer service,” Ammons said. “They’re there with you every step of the way. I met with Joe personally and he sat down with me and spent time listening to what I wanted. Their follow-through and attention to detail is impressive. And their dealer network is the same way.

“Working with Mindi Doller was a blessing,” he continued. “Her attention to detail was as good if not better than Joe’s. What’s that saying? If you want something done right, ask a woman? Well, Mindi is that woman.”

Ammons sounds genuinely excited to see his new boat in person. Look for a follow-up story on speedonthewater.com after the boat gets back from the paint shop.
