Mungle and Tomlinson Test Gone Again Team Skater 368

With a re-machined rudder (read the story) on his Skater Powerboats 368 catamaran, Gone Again top-speed shootout team owner Kenny Mungle and John Tomlinson of TNT Custom Marine—the Miami outfit that has been handling the re-rigging and setup of the 36-footer—tested before noon today. Their primary goal in today’s test session was to determine if the retooled rudder improved the cat’s high-speed handling.

With the 36-footer’s twin 1,550-hp supercharged Sterling Performance engines turning 5,400 rpm (maximum engine operating speed reportedly is 7,200 to 7,400 rpm), Tomlinson and Mungle ran the boat to 160 mph in conditions that were less than ideal, according to Tomlinson.

“There was a little bit of wind and a little bit of chop,” he said. “The rudder is much better, much better. It’s definitely handling better at high speed. I want to go back out at the end of the day, and we’ll probably make a drive location change after that.”

Mungle said he was pleased and encouraged by this morning’s results and is looking forward to testing again.

“Awesome, awesome—we’re making headway,” he said. “The winds are supposed to lay down this afternoon so we’re going to go back out there again. There is some more dialing in to do. This is a one-off. There’s no set ‘formula’ for it. So it’s going to take little time.”

Editor’s note: Speedonthewater.com will provide a report from this afternoon’s test session, as well as continue to follow the development of the Gone Again team’s Skater 368.
