Must-Watch: Offshore Racing Video from Cocoa Beach

Marc Granet, driver of the world champion Miss GEICO catamaran, is never one to shy away from the camera or publicity in general. Don’t get me wrong—it’s a good trait to have when you’re doing all you can for a major sponsor like GEICO Insurance.

So when Granet recently sent Matt Trulio and me a “must-see video” from the second Super Boat International race of the 2014 season in Cocoa Beach, Fla. in mid-May, we knew he must have been impressed with the 26-minute online video.

After watching the video, I can see why. Produced by Peter Butler of Planet Powerboat, the video, which is sponsored by the Qatar Marine Sports Federation, features coverage from the beach and boats on the course as well as tons of onboard footage from inside and outside the cockpit throughout the offshore race.

With a primary focus on the catamaran classes (Superboat and Superboat Unlimited), Butler’s commentating was excellent, the action sequences—thanks to some rough conditions—were well edited and the production team did a great job showcasing each team and providing interviews and details from a variety of racers.

If you have some time to spend, be sure to check out the Planet Powerboat video today. Granet confirmed that Butler and company were in Sarasota, Fla., for the 30th annual Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix, and are currently working on the video from that race.

At one point in the Cocoa Beach coverage, Butler, who was hyping up the battle between the Miss GEICO Offshore Racing team and the Qatar Team, called Granet the American king of offshore—no wonder Granet was so quick to send us the video. (Just kidding Marc.)
